刑鼎 xíngdǐng
tripod of laws
(literary) an ancient bronze tripod vessel inscribed with legal codes. These vessels were used in late Spring and Autumn period China to publicly announce the first written legal systems, notably by the statesman Zichan in the state of Zheng and later by Zhao Yang in the state of Jin. They represent the origin of written law in China, though the original texts are now lost.
