Johann Adam Schall von Bell (1591–1666); a German Jesuit missionary and astronomer in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties; he served as the Director of the Imperial Directorate of Astronomy 钦天监qīntiānjiàn and was instrumental in the creation of the Shixian calendar 时宪历shíxiànlì
