To cut off one's means of retreat and commit to a fight to the finish; lit. to break the cauldrons and sink the boats. Based on the historical account of General 项羽 xiàng​yǔ who destroyed his army's cooking vessels and ships after crossing a river to ensure they would fight to the death.
