桃符 táofú
peachwood charms
Charms made of two peachwood boards used in ancient times to ward off evil; they were hung by the door and either painted with the images of the gate gods 神荼 shénshū and 郁垒 yùlǜ or inscribed with their names.
Spring Festival couplets
A poetic name for 春联 chūnlián, as these paper couplets eventually replaced the original peachwood charms.
