Original meaning: (of an eagle or hawk) to keep watch or glance around
Depicts an eagle or hawk (隹) using its eyes (䀠) to keep watch or glance around. 䀠 also serves as the phonetic component. The meaning later extended to "vigilance" and "fear", although the meaning of "fear" is now typically written as 懼.
