Original meaning: putting on extra clothing

Original form of 襲. Depicts a coat (衣) inside another coat (衣), symbolizing putting on extra layers of clothing. This character was later replaced with a phonosemantic compound form as early as the bronze scripts (龖 as phonetic and 衣 as semantic).
