博学宏辞科 bóxuéhóngcíkē Imperial Examination of Broad Learning and Great Eloquence
An irregular special examination in the imperial civil service system, first established in the Tang Dynasty (731 AD) and used to select individuals with profound knowledge and outstanding literary talent. Successive dynasties including the Song and Qing continued the practice, with the character [[宏|宏|hong2]] often being replaced by [[鸿|鴻|hong2]] in the Qing dynasty due to naming taboos.
