A famous painter from the Southern Tang dynasty (circa 886–975) known for his naturalistic style of flower-and-bird painting. He was often contrasted with 黄筌huángquán for his free and rustic brushwork, known as the "wild and easy" style in contrast to the courtly "rich and noble" style. He is credited with creating the ink-wash technique for depicting nature.
