- Kūkai (774-835), an influential Japanese Buddhist monk during the Heian period who founded the Shingon or "True Word" school of Buddhism. Also known as 弘法大师 hóngfǎdàshī, he studied in Chang'an, established the temple at Mount Kōya, and is traditionally credited with inventing the hiragana syllabary.
