Kūkai
Kūkai (774-835), an influential Japanese Buddhist monk during the Heian period who founded the Shingon or "True Word" school of Buddhism. Also known as [[弘法大师|弘法大師|hong2 fa3 da4 shi1]], he studied in Chang'an, established the temple at Mount Kōya, and is traditionally credited with inventing the hiragana syllabary.
