A variety of short-grain rice common in Taiwan; it is characterized by being soft and sticky when cooked and is often used for rice cakes. This type was originally developed during the Japanese colonial period to distinguish it from local long-grain 在来米 zài​lái​mǐ and rice from the Japanese mainland.
